To tie the knot – To get hitched

by woodward on 9 September 2010

To tie the knot = to get married

To tie the knot is an informal way of saying to get married

  • Mary and John tied the knot last June.
  • When are you going to tie the knot?

Image this as two ends of something (string/rope) being tied together to form one secure knot, like two people becoming one unit (a couple)… hopefully also secure and difficult to undo :)

To get married vs. to be married

To get married: to change from being single to married; to become married (usually involves a ceremony).
To be married: means you have already had the (wedding/marriage) ceremony and you are now husband and wife.
Marriage is the noun.

  • We are married now. (We are husband and wife)
  • We got married in 2002. (Our wedding was in 2002)
  • We have a happy marriage.

To get Hitched

Another way to say to tie the knot is to get hitched (very informal)

  • Lucy and Jacob are going to get hitched this weekend.

Have you tied the knot yet?
