Before the joke…
Vocabulary
Fortune Teller = A person who can tell you what is going to happen in the future.
Palm = The under side of your hand (fortune tellers often look at a person’s palm to see the future).
Read (the past tense of To Read) has the same pronunciation as the colour Red.
When two words are pronounced the same way though have a different meaning, they are called homophones.
The Joke …
Fortune Teller: Would you like your palm read?
Woman: No thanks, I like the colour it is now.
Why is it funny?
Well, why does the woman give that response?
Because the pronunciation of read (to read a palm in the past tense and past participle), and red (the colour) are the same, the woman in the joke has confused the fortune teller’s offer of reading her future with literally changing the colour of her palm to red.
Have you ever had your palm read?
